Del Frisco’s Double Eagle: Steak Night Inside a 1920s Bank Vault

Few dining rooms in America make an entrance like this one. Del Frisco’s Philadelphia occupies a former 1920s bank hall near City Hall — a three-story cathedral of marble and columns where a glowing wine tower climbs the full height of the room and balconies draped in red velvet look down on the action. Even the old bank vault survived: it is now a private dining room where the door alone is worth the detour.

The Story

The steakhouse opened in late 2008 inside the landmark banking hall, preserving the original grandeur while turning it into one of the biggest restaurant spaces in the city — over five hundred seats spread across three levels. The scale gives it a big-night energy few steakhouses can imitate: the bar hums, the tower sparkles, and somewhere a tomahawk is always being carved.

What to Order

USDA Prime steaks are the headline, from filets to bone-in ribeyes, with Japanese A5 wagyu for the committed. Del’s jumbo lump crab cake with Cajun lobster cream is the classic opener; wagyu meatballs with tomato fondue and shaved manchego make a worthy rival. Seafood towers and cold-water lobster tails handle the surf, lobster mac and cheese handles the excess, and dessert is a duel between the warm butter cake and the six-layer lemon doberge cake. The wine list runs past a thousand selections — much of it living in that tower.

The Space

Soaring ceilings, original bank architecture, a three-story wine tower as centerpiece, and the Vault Room below for private celebrations. It is loud, glamorous and unapologetically theatrical — a steakhouse built for occasions rather than whispers.

Who It’s For

Birthday squads, deal-closers, wine-tower gawkers and anyone who thinks a great steak deserves architecture to match.

Good to Know

Do I need a reservation? For dinner, especially weekends, absolutely — though the bar welcomes walk-ins.

What is the must-order dish? A prime bone-in ribeye plus the jumbo lump crab cake to start; butter cake to finish.

Can I book the vault? Yes — the original bank vault is one of several private dining rooms and books up fast.

Is there a dress code? Business casual reads right; the room rewards dressing up a little.

How big is the wine selection? More than a thousand labels from around the world, showcased in the three-story tower.
