The Philadelphian goes through grueling training, which pays off in the final round, helping him land a decisive blow against Apollo Creed. Few people know that Rocky might not have been filmed in one of the country’s oldest cities. This was due to a lack of funding for the picture. Producers saw a financial advantage in moving to Los Angeles to avoid paying local authorities for on-location filming permits. However, the screenwriter, who spent his formative years in the “City of Brotherly Love,” was adamant about filming there. Before the film’s release, the location was known for the nearby Philadelphia Museum of Art and the monument to one of the founding fathers of the U.S., Benjamin Franklin. The stone steps are featured in the first three films, as well as in Rocky V and Rocky Balboa.
After the fledgling director’s film became a success, a symbolic statue of the main character was installed at the bottom right of the stairs. This sculpture also attracts countless tourists who line up to take a picture with the legendary monument. The bronze statue shows Stallone as Rocky, raising his arms in victory.
