Early Life and Education

Jill Scott was born in Philadelphia on April 4, 1972. She was raised by her mother and grandmother and describes her childhood as very happy, filled with love and support.

She graduated from the Philadelphia High School for Girls and attended Temple University. She worked two jobs to put herself through school, all while dreaming of becoming a high school English teacher. After graduating, she became a teacher’s assistant. However, her teaching career quickly disillusioned her, prompting Jill to make a dramatic change in her life.

Music Career

Jill began writing poetry and songs and performing them at poetry readings. At one of these events, she caught the attention of musician Amir Thompson from the hip-hop group “The Roots.” He invited Jill to join the band, and their first collaboration was the track “You Got Me.” In 2000, the group won a Grammy Award for the song. This period marked Scott’s official debut as a performer.

Following this success, Jill signed a contract with Hidden Beach Recordings and released her debut album, Who Is Jill Scott?: Words and Sounds Vol. 1. The song “A Long Walk” from the album was nominated for a Grammy in early 2003. She would go on to win her first prestigious Grammy Award two years later for her performance of “Cross My Mind.”

In 2001, her live album Experience: Jill Scott 826+ was released, followed by her second album, Beautifully Human: Words and Sounds Vol. 2, in 2004. The next year, she published a collection of poems. Her third studio album was released in 2007. During this time, Jill Scott earned two more Grammy Awards for her songs “God Bless The Child” and “Daydreaming.”

Expanding her creative reach, the singer went on a European tour. After it ended in 2008, she recorded her second live album, Live in Paris+.

Two years later, Jill Scott terminated her contract with Hidden Beach Recordings. The label’s founder sued her, claiming she had not fully fulfilled her contract and that she owed her success to the label. Jill filed a countersuit and signed a new contract with Warner Brothers.

In an attempt to recoup some of their losses, Hidden Beach Records decided to release unreleased songs. Meanwhile, Jill continued to work on her new album, The Light of the Sun. To support the album, she embarked on a tour across the U.S. The official album release was in 2011, after Scott had performed in 18 cities. It debuted at number one on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart, selling 135,000 copies in its first week.

The album was preceded by the single “Shame,” and the official lead single was the track “So in Love” featuring Anthony Hamilton. It peaked at number 43 on the U.S. Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and topped the Urban Adult Contemporary Chart for 14 weeks. The album’s second official single, “So Gone (What My Mind Says),” reached number 28 on the US Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. A music video was also filmed for the song “Hear My Call.”

To promote her new album, Jill Scott gave many interviews and launched it on various music platforms. Fans were also given the opportunity to purchase access to exclusive videos and photos. The accompanying tour was incredibly successful, with all concert tickets selling out quickly. The album became the most successful of her career and earned four NAACP Image Awards:

  • Outstanding Female Artist
  • Outstanding Album
  • Outstanding Song (for “So in Love”)
  • Outstanding Music Video (for “Hear My Call”)

Jill Scott released her next album, Woman, on Atlantic Records. It topped the Billboard 200 Albums Chart, selling 58,000 copies in its first week.
