From foundation to popularity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The outset of the interesting biography of the theatre honor stretches back to the end of the 20th century. It was founded by the Performing Arts League of Philadelphia, thus it can rightly be assumed that this award appeared in the City of Brotherly Love. In addition, the name of the prize perpetuates the glory of the eponymous prominent family, whose members were born in Philly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two years after the founding of the award, the organizers came up with a new name, as well as slightly modified the solemn event, etc. The Helen Hayes Awards and Joseph Jefferson Awards served as an inspiration for locals when they created the Barrymore Awards. During the debut season of the program, their capital was estimated at more than ninety thousand dollars. There were over forty experts who determined the best of the best.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts in Philadelphia hosted the first award ceremony. Walnut Street Theatre became another local venue for the award. In the summer of 2012, as a result of the prolonged financial crisis, the Barrymore Awards ceased to exist. A month after that, the winners received their legendary prizes via email for the last time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Modern history and famous prize winners<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

After the Theater Alliance of Greater Philadelphia shut down in 2013, eleven theater administrators and creative leaders from the City of Brotherly Love started a new organization, Theatre Philadelphia. Awards with remuneration were given in the previous season. For the current seasons, managers handed out category-specific distinctions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The debut revived award ceremony under the Theatre Philadelphia took place in 2014 at the Merriam Theater. Over the next four years, the event was held in various art venues in the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the 2018-2019 season, laureates competed for the prize in 24 categories. Five people had the chance to win not only a statuette but also more than one hundred thousand dollars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following a coronavirus epidemic, the world was put under quarantine. This was a new experience in the history of the Philadelphia award, as it was canceled for the first time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
