Read more about the fascinating journey to success of an African American vocalist from our city at philadelphia-trend.

The beginning and development of a musical career

Marian Anderson was born at the end of the nineteenth century in the first capital of the United States of America. There, a six-year-old girl sang various religious songs in a local church. Her father did his best to provide for Marian and her three sisters. That is why Anderson, already at a young age, sang in the church choir and earned fifty cents for each performance to help her family. The choir was called the People’s Chorus of Philadelphia, consisting exclusively of African Americans.

Anderson was called “The Baby Contralto” for her childlike, truly unique voice. Philadelphians were inspired by that singing and advised the girl’s parents to send her to a music school. With the death of the breadwinner, the family quickly ran out of money. The dream faded before the young girl, but the above-mentioned local fans did not allow this to happen. Parishioners of the church liturgy, where Anderson performed, united and donated towards the future musical development of the singer.

Mentored by Mary Patterson and then Agnes Reifsnyder, the native of Philadelphia received a professional education. Later, she became a student of the renowned voice teacher Giuseppe Boghetti. He gave Marian profound knowledge, owing to him, she confidently debuted at Carnegie Hall. After completing her studies, she gained practical experience on the European continent.

What is she remembered for?

The average listener in America and abroad had already known the young singer in the first half of the 20th century. In 1939, the Roosevelt presidential couple invited Marian to perform at the White House. Once, she was scheduled to sing at Constitution Hall in Washington, but Daughters of the American Revolution refused the African American singer. As later revealed, the aforementioned organization preferred only white performers on stage. At the time, the opera singer already had an army of admirers, who were enraged by the racist scandal, so they started boycotting the current event. The First Lady gave permission to hold a legendary concert on the steps of the Abraham Lincoln Memorial in response to a shameful incident. More than seventy-five thousand people eyewitnessed the performance of the native of Philadelphia. This event was broadcast all over the world and became a powerful symbol of consolidation around the reasonable values of civilized states. For a woman from the City of Brotherly Love, the performance marked a climax not only in musical activities but also in her activism for black rights in the United States. Subsequently, the philanthropist began cooperation with the United Nations, which awarded her the Peace Prize.

Over her lifetime, Marian Anderson also won a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. In 1993, Philly’s star died in her house in Oregon. Eleven years later, her unusual voice, which revolutionized the entire recording industry, was commemorated with a memorial star on a famous street in Hollywood.

The legendary Philadelphia Museum of Art preserves memorabilia related to the artist. Our city has the National Marian Anderson Museum as well. The building serves as a cultural and tourist attraction, which perpetuates the memories of the local woman and tells visitors about the singer’s life and work.

This girl from the City of Brotherly Love was born into an average, poor family, but she managed to escape from the Philadelphia slums against all odds.
