The ideological inspirers, Tariq Trotter and Ahmir Thompson, were students of the local educational institution. Nowadays, they keep developing their creative project. However, they had to get through a lot of mud and obstacles at the outset of their career.

The group, originally named Square Roots, was looking for its audience right on the streets of the poor neighborhoods of Philadelphia. When bassist Leonard Hubbard and rapper Malik Abdul-Basit joined the mentioned musicians, things picked up. In the new lineup, they first began to be invited to perform in local nightclubs and then in New York ones.

How did they become successful?

Six years after the formation, their first album “Organix” came out. By that time, one more member joined the band, keyboardist Scott Storch.

The aforementioned debut album was quite successful. The songwriters reaped the fruits of durational rehearsals on the compositions. Also, the album took them to a whole new level. The Philadelphia band caught the interest of several well-known labels, who offered them cooperation.

They chose the Californian DGC Records, which at that time worked with Nirvana on the legendary studio album “Nevermind”. The debut song with this label is called “Do You Want More?!!!??!”, which has a peculiar sound, as the musicians recorded it almost live, with beatboxer Rahzel Brown.

At the end of the twentieth century, the album “Things Fall Apart” was released, which became the best work of the Roots at the time. Strong acclaim from music experts and financial efforts allowed the former street singers to taste triumph for themselves. The track “You Got Me”, featuring vocalist Erykah Badu, won the Grammy Awards in 2000 for Best Rap Performance By a Duo or Group.

The Roots started the new 21st century with long tours. They also met other groups, negotiated and collaborated on new creative projects, such as: “Phrenology”, “The Tipping Point”, “Game Theory” and “Rising Down”. In addition, the musicians from our city supported rap star Jay Z in 2001 at MTV Unplugged.

In 2008, comedian Jimmy Fallon approached the Roots to be his house band when he became a late-night talk show host. He explained that they were the only group that could provide excellent and appropriate backup music for vocalists in any genre. The choice caused shock waves in several directions. Fans of the Roots believed the format was too limited and demeaning for a band generally considered unusual. Network managers feared that the musicians known for strong social commentary and their own course might alienate advertisers and audiences. Eventually, the Roots yielded positive results for talk shows, which in turn expanded the fan base. The artists revealed their talents, which were hidden before, for example, they showed their comic sides.

Since the last century, the popularity of the band has somewhat decreased, but true fans will never forget such albums and singles as “How I Got Over”, “Undun”, “Wise Up Ghost”.

Over the long history of the band, they have been awarded various prizes. But still, the most memorable is the Grammy Awards for the best R&B album “Wake Up!”, as well as the single “Hang On in There ” for the best traditional R&B vocal performance.

Back in the day, our city had many great musical groups, but some have forever stayed in the hearts of the citizens.
